Aircraft Pressurization Systems

As the oxygen density and air pressure of high-altitude air are both too low for the well-being of individuals, a majority of aircraft utilize pressurization systems in order to manage cabin air. While pressurization systems may differ in their part makeup depending on the aircraft and its characteristics, many will utilize similar methods such as using engine bleed air, valves, and control systems for pressure management. As aircraft pressurization is crucial for the safety and health of pilots, crew members, and passengers alike, it can be very beneficial to understand how they function throughout the course of a flight.

Operating at high altitudes can bring various benefits to flight operations ranging from increased engine efficiency with lower fuel burning to safety as aircraft can avoid hazardous weather and obstructions. As such, pilots will often try to fly at the altitude closest to the cruise ceiling while following flight rules and various limitations of systems. As humans begin to face health risks when surpassing 8,000 feet in altitude, however, it becomes the job of the aircraft pressurization system to maintain a safe cabin altitude and cabin pressure regardless of the characteristics of the atmosphere outside.

Due to the specific design of the cabin and cargo hold, an increased amount of air pressure can exist and be maintained inside the aircraft without risking damage or hazardous situations. In order to increase the pressure within the cabin, the aircraft pressurization system relies on bleed air from turbine engines or other powerplants in order to pump pressurized air into the aircraft. Throughout the flight, air is regularly released as well to manage a set cabin pressure value and for air to be recycled. To release pressurized air from the cabin, a component known as an outflow valve is implemented.

The cabin pressure regulator is an important element of the aircraft pressurization system, and it is what allows operators to adjust various pressure settings for increased control. With the cabin pressure regulator, pilots can increase or decrease the amount of cabin pressure the system should maintain at all times. Based on the set cabin pressure settings, the outflow valve will then be operated to permit the proper amount of air to escape to maintain a set pressure value. These controls can be very useful, as they allow for differential pressure or a set cabin altitude to be maintained and adjusted as necessary.

As the pressure within an aircraft cabin is most often held at a value of 8,000 feet or below, the pressurization system will ensure that the cabin altitude and differential pressure both increase at a gradual pace after takeoff. This makes it so that altitude does not rapidly increase regardless of the speed at which the aircraft is ascending. If the differential pressure reaches its maximum value before the aircraft finishes its climb, the cabin altitude will continue to rise as the aircraft finishes its ascent and the differential pressure will remain the same.

To protect the cabin from over-pressurization, a safety valve is implemented and acts as a relief valve that can release pressure as needed. The safety valve can also act as a vacuum relief valve when the ambient pressure surpasses the cabin pressure, and it will then allow air to enter the cabin. Lastly, the safety valve may also be manually operated by crew members in order dump cabin pressure as needed.

With the aircraft pressurization system, cabin altimeter, pressure gauge, and other equipment and instruments, managing a safe cabin altitude can be done with ease.
